BRO! A Place To Bury Strangers fuckin’ rocks. There’s no way around it. IT’S HEAVY. This Brooklyn, NEW YORK band is loud & proud. This is good music to listen to while you are getting buried alive & yet somehow manage to make it out alive. I mean seriously- that whole scenario could be soundtracked by this band. They bring new textures of rock I’ve never heard before; thanks in part to band leader Oliver Ackermann’s own guitar-effects-pedal company Death By Audio. I really jumped on board with this band on their 2015 album Transfixiation. Their impressive longevity is not only due to the fact they can cater to their wearin'-sunglasses-inside crowd BUT also being able to bring the noise without sounding noisy... if the makes any sense at all. Let me try and break this band down to it's simplest terms: It began in 2002, in a tinnitus-inducing noise-pop world, with textural richness & emotional depth, where Joy Division-meets-Misfits & sheets of static & distortion collide..... a land of industrial feedback... here is where we find the one thing we need...

27 Billie Holiday Billie Holiday The first jazz singer to really incorporate blues & move peoples hearts, Billie is immortal. I didn't get into her with her traditional music but rather the 2007 album Remixed and Reimagined . Even through the chops & screws- one thing was unmistakable- that voice- so beautiful, so unique, so pure... She said she tried to sing like a horn & it's evident. She is one of the most accomplish vocal performers of all time. A half-a-century later & her style is still mimicked. Billie is as American as apple pie. 131 Grouper Grouper Reverb. Echo. Effects. Acoustic. Droney. These are some words you could use to explain Grouper's earlier work. Grouper is the solo project of Liz Harris. Her first album was self-titled & self-released. Grouper's second album was 2006's Way Their Crept . There was something special about that mid-ought's droney-underwater sounding indie. Grouper would go on to release five (!) more albums before I came on board as a fan: 2006's Wide , 2007's Cover The Windows & The Walls , 2008's widely acclaimed Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill & 2011's double-album (but separately released) AIA: Dream Loss & AIA: Alien Observer ... just to be followed up by 2012's double album: Violent Replacement Part I and Violent Replacement Part II . 91 EELS EELS After a couple of song-rich, keyboard-dominated albums released under the Man Called E moniker, Mark Everett morphed into the trio Eels with 1996’s [DreamWorks Records released] Beautiful Freak . At its best, the debut gave a trip-hop twist to the California singer/songwriter tradition; at its worst, it suggests one more bummed-out wise guy’s take on Beck’s collage-style rock. With a sense of humor that skews toward cynicism that’s alleviated occasionally by bouts of sincerity, Everett is not the likeliest subject to make a transcendent album about death. But he nearly pulls it off on 1998’s Electro-Shock Blues . The music is somber but not sedate, with bursts of saxophone, off-kilter orchestration, and outright noise evoking the turbulence beneath the deadpan vocals.
