Anderson .Paak
I first got on board with Paak on his 2016 album Malibu. It was like re-discovering Stevie Wonder all over again. That album in particular is hit after hit, truly one of the best albums in recent times. I was a fan of his music right away. Little did I know, Dr. Dre, who apparently was at a studio session where Paak's song "Sued" got the attention of Dre, who listened to it three times in a row before getting down to business in the studio... but little did I know Dre was already a fan and quickly signed this Oxnard, California native to his Aftermath record label. Also- little did I know, Paak is a drummer! If you haven't seen Paak's NPR Tiny Desk Concert, do yourself a favor and check that out. Paak's first release was 2012's album O.B.E. Vol 1 under the pseudonym Breezy Lovejoy (his choice of a name, not mine!). Paak's first release under his own name (even though he was technically born as Brandon Paak Anderson) was 2014's Venice, followed by 2016's Grammy-nominated Malibu, & 2018's Oxnard & last year's (2019) Ventura. See a trend? It is my understanding that Oxnard and Ventura were recorded during the same sessions so I see those albums as a double-album sold separately. I would be doing a disservice if I did not mention his backing band- his E Street Band if you will- or as they call themselves The Free Nationals. Anderson is also the vocal half of NxWorries with producer Knxwledge, a producer who landed "Momma" on Kendrick's To Pimp a Butterfly. Okay... some ways to describe Paak's amazing voice: Tenor. Smooth. Crooner. Oozing. Raspy.
Okay- now a summary of his narrative...
After truckin' away quietly on the West-Coast- Dr. Dre (as he's done before with Snoop, Em, Kendrick, etc.) brings Anderson under his wing and on-board for his come-back album 2015's Compton. In may have taken a stage-name change (*cough* *cough* [we're looking at you Breezy Lovejoy]) & what may have seemed like an eternity for Anderson, but after Malibu hit my ears, not only was it a whole new world for me- or mainstream certification from the mainstream for .Paak- but it was only the beginning for he & I... he's got more to give and my ears have more to listen to.
In short: Anderson .Paak is an artist who pays tributes to both his own personal tribulations but also artists of yore like Curtis Mayfield all while breaking through the stratosphere into new territory, breaking ground on his own, into a bright new future. It ain't 2Pac... it's
