D.R.A.M.
D.R.A.M.
I first got on board with D.R.A.M. (short for Does Real Ass Music) with the song "Broccoli." I didn't know at the time that this Hampton, Virginia rapper had already had a viral hit with "Cha Cha," in no small part thanks to Beyoncé dancing to it. In 2016 he released his debut album, Big Baby DRAM. I know I've talked about that wonderful feeling when music hits you right away, every fiber of your soul, and you automatically become a fan... that was D.R.A.M. & the first song off of his first album, "Get It Myself." It was angelic. Short, sweet, soulful & satisfying. The whole album smashes because D.R.A.M. doesn't just rap about the stereotypical shit (boats 'n' hoes- I'm looking at you!) but instead raps about seeking higher-level powers and higher-level consciousness. So yes: this is conscious rap... with a cloud of smoke. We're still waiting on a proper follow-up. D.R.A.M. has been keeping himself busy, appearing on track with the Gorillaz and even Neil Young. In August of '19 he dropped the single "The Lay Down" (with Chad Smith on drums!). DRAM released a note along with the single that I think sums him up best, so I'll leave with you with that...
“No one sings anymore,” DRAM wrote. “Ain’t no true SANGERS out there! No one’s taking it to the stage. Nobody’s pouring their heart out, but that pattern stops here!”
He's the man...
It's...
