Eagulls
Eagulls
I was going through a big post-punk phase when I discovered
this band. I can’t recall how I came across them. I do remember buying their
first record, 2014’s self-titled album. It was just the sound I was looking for
at the time. Guitars! The band hasn’t really been active since their second
album, 2016’s Ullages, an anagram for the band’s name. Other than their two
albums, the band has a three-song cassette, 2010s’ Songs of Prey. They released a
single, their earliest widely-available-release: 2011’s "Council Flat Blues" and
a split EP with Mazes. There is also an EP released in 2012, but that’s it for
their discography. Let’s get to the history: Eagulls were formed in North
England, specifically Leeds, UK in 2010 when guitarist Mark Goldsworthy
and drummer Henry Ruddel began jamming
and soon the lineup was completed with the addition of bassist Tom Kelly and
second guitarist Liam Mathews and the distinct vocals of George Mitchell. Their
first release was the 7” single “Council Flat Blues” and the band soon
found themselves climbing up the Leeds live music scene. They continued their
rapid ascent with shows supporting the likes of Fucked Up and Iceage and by the time 2013 rolled around the band found themselves in the U.S. playing showcase shows like South By
South West. It’s easy to see why this
band had such a rapid success rate: people love revved-up post-punk songs. The
guitar and bass parts are catchy and Mitchell’s death-pop cadence-roll is perfectly suited for these rockin' songs.
Songs like “Possessed” can’t help but get the blood flowing. It’s easy to see
how the band is inspired by 70’s post-punk, but they really took that blueprint and ran with it- making it their own; it’s inspiring to see how raw and
determined yet effortlessly easy they make it all sound. And that’s the truest and most admirable thing about Eagulls: they are a SOUND. They are punk- all their
releases are on DIY-small-indie labels. They are real. It’s a shame it’s been
on quiet on the western front with Eagulls since their second album… according to their Wiki page they
are no longer active… I don’t remember there ever being an announcement of a
break up. Hopefully it's not truly over because this band is just too damn good... but we will just have to wait to see what the future holds for this rockin’ band…
It's…
Eagulls
