Explosions In The Sky
Explosions In The Sky
Explosions in the Sky is a bombastic, instrumental rock group from Austin, TX. They've been compared to groups like Mogwai and Godspeed You Block Emperor. Explosions in the Sky features guitarists Mark Smith and Munaf Rayani, Michael James on bass, and Christopher Hrasky on drums. Explosions in the Sky, these post-rock veterans have been writing some of this world's most beautiful soundscapes via music this side of the millennium, and appropriately so. The band formed in Texas in 1999. If heavily evolved guitar work and narrative-styled instrumentals sounds like something up your alley, I would definitely check this band out. The have one of the most appropriate names, because their music starts soft and quiet, building the foundation before it builds to a beautiful crest before crashing down in waves- and this is all in the form of MUSIC! Their debut album, 2000's How Strange, Innocence was locally distributed on CD-Rs. The following year saw the release of high-water mark, 2001's Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever. From there, Explosions were at the top of the list as far as instrumental post-rock bands. Yet, as other instrumental bands went by the weigh-side, Explosions somehow found themselves not only staying at the top, but showing some serious lasting power. 2003 saw the release of their third album, The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. 2004 saw them release a soundtrack and score for the film Friday Night Lights. 2005 saw the release of their fourth album, The Rescue. 2007 saw the release of All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. Although I had heard the band name around the usual webazines and what not, it wasn't until the release of 2011's Take Care, Take Care, Take Care that I truly considered myself a fan. And although any Explosions fan will tell you any of their album is their favorite and they ALL are truly the great, I've tend to find that their favorite album is the album they came on board with or when introduced to the band by. That was Take Care, Take Care, Take Care for me and I still return to the album when I need a good taste of Explosions in the Sky. I will argue that that album is their most polished & focused effort, a veteran band really coming into their own. Out to impress no-one except their truly beloved: the fans they had found along the way of building an entire scene on their own. Aside from some other soundtracks (2013's Prince Avalanche, 2013's Lone Survivor, and 2014's Manglehorn) the band most recently released their seventh album, 2016's The Wilderness. I'm embarrassed to say I've never see them live, but their on my list to see next- whenever concerts are a thing again. It's crazy they even play live because this music seems impossible to re-create, but if that's the sense I get from their studio albums I can't even imagine what I what I live show would be like! I'll have to get back to you. Until then, I'll leave you with a song (or 2)!
"Your Hand In Mine"
"First Breath After Coma"
No need to fly...
It's...
