The NBC Olympics; Jaws; Indian Jones; Jurassic Park; Harry Potter; [mother fuckin'] STAR WARS! You can easily imagine each of those epic melodies for each of those iconic movies in your head & for good reason: each were created by the legendary (and [as of this writing] 80-year-old) & the always-high-in demand-Hollywood composer John Williams! And it's easy to see why for Mr. John Williams has a wickedly great-and-keen-sense of creating a true score which not only just fits every FILM he is responsible for scoring- but nearly every God-damn SCENE! It's almost like God undoubtedly blessed him with this-other-worldly sixth-sense. And the credibility and recognition is there: He has 75 Grammy nominations & with that ultimately brings him to be the 6th most winning-est with 26 [!]. A complete compositional genius. Newbies  should seek out his John Williams Greatest Hits 1969-1999- but unfortunately that doesn't include his iconic Harry Potter theme, but the good news: any listener would appreciate the cinematic (even without the visuals) experience of the 2001 soundtrack Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. We also have him to thank for this EPIC Star Wars disco track.

He continues to keep killin' them...

John Williams

I first found about this legendary classical-guitarist WAY LATE into his career. But as the saying goes: "Better late than never!!!" I am still a newbie when it comes to the depth of classical music: I would just tip my toes in with the HOLY TRINITY: Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. I was lucky enough to be introduced to (another) John Williams. I wasn't familiar with his work until my Godfather-in-law, Frank, introduced me to his 1999 release: Schubert: Arpeggio Sonata in A Minor, D. 821 - Giuliani: Guitar Concerto No. 1 in A Major, Op. 30. Now, I had heard of this Schubert fella' before- but never this Giuliani guy- proving my ignorance but also proving how Williams himself single-handily was my entry-way into digging deeper into the classical works. I also new within' the first few seconds of this first track of  that Schubert & Giuliani CD, I was going to be an instant fan because I fell in love right-away; I've always been a fan of classical guitar; I had, however, never heard anything this effortlessly played ethereal music delivered to my ears. The blend of a perfect mix of effortless guitar-playing with accompanying strings; It truly makes for a heavenly experience- not to even mention the melodious melodies of if it all. I truly had never heard anything like it before. This was the first time I found myself actually bobbing my head on a FIRST LISTEN to a classical piece! Other than having some really great compositional works of some Beatles songs, and being a founding father of one of the most underrated progressive-rock bands of all time (but we'll get to that on a separate post)... the Aussie-bred Williams, simply put, has a grace with his playing. A humble virtuoso genius. Check out my personal favorite "Air on a G String." Newbies can't go wrong with any of his work, however, I would point newbies to (the hard to find U.K.-only-release [but the easy-to recreate-by-building-a-playlist-on Spotify] the aptly titled: John Williams The Essential  Collection.

Truthfully, though, you can't go wrong with any of them...

The Band

19 The Band The Band First known as the Hawks, the Band got their initial fame as Bob Dylan’s backing band. Remember when Bob Dylan sold out and went electric, angering fans so much that they called him “ Judas ”? Well, you can thank all of that to the Band. For a band that sounds so fucking American (seriously- no band has done the whole Americana roots music better than the Band) it’s pretty funny most of them were Canadian. After finally branching out on their own in 1968, the Band would release some of the best music ever recorded… and if you thought the Beatles had a hell of a run- check out the Band’s discography: 1968’s Music From Big Pink , 1969’s self-titled The Band , 1970’s Stage Fright , 1971’s Cahoots , 1972’s live-album Rock of Ages , 1973’s Moondog Matinee , 1975’s Northern Lights -Southern Cross , and 1977’s Islands. Lynard Skynard may have taken the crown for greatest southern rock band, but for a band full of Canadians and Americans, the Band really embraces a

Crystal Castles

61 Crystal Castles Crystal Castles If you ever wondered what it would sound like if the video-game character Mario was catapulted through a plate-glass window- you'd get close to describing Crystal Castles. Cut up vocals and soothing waves of synth, live shows known for "fan riots, crowd surges, and metal barriers destroyed" Toronto electronic-punk-bleep-pop duo Crystal Castles is music that could only be made in the post-modern / post-millennium era, with a fan base that remembers the 8-bit era. Some dance music is meant to be played in the dark, but few dance bands bring their own darkness. This is dance music for sociopaths. Crystal Castles is the brain-child of Ethan Kath. The band began as a Kath solo project in 2003, but the producer recruited a 15-year-old Alice Glass to add vocals. Glass recorded rough soundcheck vocals for five tracks, which were secretly recorded by an en engineer, and Kath uploaded the material un der the name Crystal Castles. After rele

FKA twigs

99 FKA twigs FKA twigs FKA twigs is the brain-child of Tahliah Barnett. Under her stage-name of FKA twigs (which I'll just refer to her as twigs from here-on-out) she has released three EP’s (2012’s EP1 , 2013’s EP2 , and 2015’s incredible M3LL155X EP )  and two albums (2014’s LP1 & 2019’s Magdalene ). With someone with such a small catalogue, it's amazing how dense and rich this music is. Before Billie Eilish made the whole whisper-singer mainstream last year, twigs was already releasing down-tempo-trip-hop-whisper-sung music back in 2012. That is when she released her debut, EP1 . twigs hqd been studying dance since the age of six, but deep down, she knew she always wanted to be a recording artist so she eventually left the dancing behind (in a way [dance has always been a big part of her project]) to focus on her music project. However, limiting to just a music project is doing it an injustice in labeling. It’s more of a visual-dancing-art project. Ever ev
